Alex Armistead – Psychologist with an interest in working with children, adolescents and their families, as well as adults, from a trauma- and attachment-informed lens
Alex is a warm and compassionate Psychologist who works with children, adolescents, young adults, adults and families experiencing a range of emotional, behavioural and psychological challenges. He is committed to creating a safe and non-judgemental therapeutic environment where clients feel heard, understood and supported to make meaningful change.
Supporting children, adolescents and their families, as well as adults
Alex has experience working with young people presenting with anxiety, depression, emotional regulation difficulties, complex trauma, grief and loss, substance use, self-harm and interpersonal difficulties. He has experience in assessment and intervention, parent consultation, and working collaboratively with families, schools, caseworkers, child protection services and other professionals.
Alex also supports parents and caregivers of children experiencing complex trauma and behavioural difficulties, drawing on emotion coaching, autonomy-supportive parenting and attachment-informed strategies. He has a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD and autism, through an affirming approach that recognises individual strengths, needs and experiences.
Therapeutic approach
Alex takes a client-centred, trauma-informed and attachment-informed approach, recognising the importance of relationships and life experiences in understanding psychological wellbeing. He draws on a range of evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), psychosomatic approaches and play-based techniques. Alex tailors therapy to each client’s individual needs, strengths and goals. He believes connection, psychological safety, curiosity and acceptance are central to effective therapeutic work above all else and aims to support clients in developing greater self-understanding and practical strategies for navigating life’s challenges.
Professional qualifications and clinical experience
Alex is a Registered Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA) and a member of the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc. (AAPI). He holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science from the University of New South Wales and a Graduate Diploma of Psychology Advanced from Monash University. Alex has clinical experience across a variety of settings including private practice, paediatric multidisciplinary clinics and Aboriginal community based services.
