Psychiatry

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor with a specialisation in mental health. They are able to prescribe medications and biological treatments for mental illness, as well as completing assessments and providing talking therapies. A psychiatrist may be involved in an individual’s care where there is a question about diagnosis, where there are multiple disorders diagnosed or other complexity, where there are physical symptoms or illnesses to manage alongside mental health concerns, or where it has been difficult to find effective medications. A psychiatrist will work closely with the rest of an individual’s treatment team including their General Practitioner, Psychologist, other Allied Health Providers and other Medical Specialists.
